What’s Wrong Here? Hint: ‘A’ for Effort

Sept. 8, 2022
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: ‘A’ for effort

Did this box get broken? Is this a temporary fix? I’m not sure what happened here, but I do know that the installer got creative with the methods for securing this cover. On closer examination, it does appear this box may be broken at the top. If so, it is time to replace it. Section 110.12(B) prohibits damaged parts which may adversely affect the safe operation or mechanical strength of the equipment. The huge gap at the top of the box along with the openings in the cover allow moisture and rain to easily enter this box. Moisture or water can wreak havoc with any splices or terminations inside this enclosure. For boxes installed in damp or wet locations, Sec. 314.15 requires the box to be placed or equipped to prevent moisture from entering or accumulating in the box. That is not happening here. I am speculating here, but perhaps cable ties and switch plates were the only items available to make this box as safe as possible when it broke. If so, I’ll give the installer an “A” for effort. But the safest solution would be to replace all of the broken parts to bring this up to Code.
