What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Squeeze Play

March 9, 2022
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Squeeze Play

Why use a cable connector when you can simply squeeze the cable between the wireway and its cover? That must have been what this installer was thinking. At least they decided to protect the NM cable by wrapping some tape around it before squeezing it in there.

Section 300.11(A) requires cable assemblies to be securely fastened in place, but I’m not sure how well this loosely installed cover will perform at securing this cable. Section 334.30 requires NM cables to be supported and secured by staples, cable ties, straps, hangers, or similar fittings designed and installed in a manner that does not damage the cable. I don’t think this cover squeeze method fits into any of those descriptions. Section 376.100(D) requires covers to be securely fastened to the wireway. I suppose we could debate whether this cover complies with that requirement.
