EC&M Tech Talk Video — Conduit and the Code
In this episode of “EC&M Tech Talk,” Randy Barnett, a journeyman electrician, electrical instructor, inspector, author, trainer, and electrical safety expert, takes viewers through the conduits that are found in the National Electrical Code.
Using the NEC Table of Contents, it is easy to identify which Articles address circular raceways, or conduits. Article 342 [Intermediate Metal Conduit (Type IMC)] begins the conduit Articles, which run through Art. 362 [Electrical Nonmetallic Tubing (Type ENT)].
Fittings and accessories are discussed for each type of conduit. Several examples are demonstrated. The difference between schedule 40 and schedule 80 Type PVC conduit is shown. The differences between Type IMC and Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC) are discussed. Conduit bodies are demonstrated, while the requirements for splicing within are presented.
Next, Randy explains how locating information in the various conduit Articles is greatly simplified through its formatting. Each NEC Article is laid out in the same manner. He uses Art. 355 [Type RTRC Conduit] (fiberglass) as an example. In each Article, the Section ending in .2 is the definition of the conduit. The Section ending in .10 can be used to determine where the conduit can be used on the job, while the Section ending in .12 identifies specifics of where it cannot be used. Other examples include installation requirements for securing and supporting, bending, and grounding.
Whether a review for experienced electrical workers or information for those just entering the trade, this Tech Talk episode provides practical information on the types of conduits and how to locate needed Code information.
