| | | In Episode 38 of “EC&M Asks,” a video series featuring subject matter experts (SMEs) answering reader-submitted questions regarding popular electrical topics, Lanny Floyd, P.E., discusses what type of workers are most at risk of electric shock and arc flash injury — and why this may include more people than you may think. |
| A job hazard analysis is completed prior to the start of any construction job where there is potential for injury. Larger general contractors often make these a common requirement before the start of work. This is a way for both subcontractors and GCs to collaborate on safety management. A JHA helps determine the risk of the work being completed on the site. In simple terms, it is a tool to reduce the chance of a loss from occurring. |
| In construction, the phrase “productive labor” is used to define an individual’s pace of work. Both of these methods (the economic and individual productivity measurements) make one flawed assumption — everything that labor does contributes to productivity. One visit to most jobs will quickly prove that assumption wrong. |
| |
| | | The most effective tool in electrical safety is knowledge — not only knowledge of the hazards but also knowledge of how to protect ourselves and others from those hazards. Why your answers to the questions in this article could mean the difference between maintaining an electrically safe work environment and an electrical injury or fatality. |

| Rosendin's CEO Emeritus Mike Greenawalt and Edward Cota with Arizona's Department of Education talk with EC&M Editor-in-Chief Ellen Parson, continuing this fascinating podcast discussion on how construction leaders can benefit from public-private partnerships like this, how to develop similar models to teach in middle/high schools and how to help shift the perception of the skilled trades in not only students’ minds but also their parents’. |
| Workers who labor in electrical occupations really do labor, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). A newspaper’s analysis of the BLS’s first-ever Occupational Requirements Survey places electrical workers high up on a ranking of the most physically demanding jobs. Reporting on the survey, the Washington Post concluded that electrician is the 13th most “physically demanding” occupation. |
