Modern lighting design is about more than building codes and energy efficiency. While those are essential components of any commercial smart lighting control project, the best installations also emphasize occupant comfort and real-world functionality.
The newly expanded ARISTA® Advanced Lighting Control System from Intermatic makes it easy to create dynamic indoor lighting environments while balancing performance and occupant comfort. One way the smart system does this is through user-created lighting scenes.
What is a Lighting Scene?
Lighting scenes allow users to create lighting presets for a specific mood, ambient condition, or application. This could mean dimming certain lights while boosting others or turning lights within a given area ON or OFF. The benefit is that this preset (or ‘scene’) can be saved for occupants to return to with the push of a button.
In practice, the applications for lighting scenes are limitless. A classroom or meeting room may create a lighting scene to improve visibility during presentations. A restaurant or retail space may have multiple lighting scenes based on customer and staff needs (e.g., prep, service, after-hours, etc.). An office may create unique scenes for in-office days and days when employees are working from home. The list goes on.
Like a thermostat, lighting scenes give building managers and occupants control over their environments. In the same way that nobody wants to work in an office that’s too hot or too cold, occupants are most comfortable when indoor lighting environments match the activity or occupant need at hand.
Leveraging ARISTA in Commercial Lighting Applications
ARISTA delivers the best of both worlds by providing facilities managers with robust control of base settings while empowering occupants to choose lighting scenes and dimming levels within defined parameters.
New ALC-2B-BT and ALC-4B-BT Programmable Switches take the place of traditional in-wall switches and can be hardwired or battery-powered, allowing for extreme versatility and easy installation.
The programmable switches include default functionality for ON/OFF and dimming control out of the box; however, each button on the switches can also be programmed to meet specific application needs, including selecting lighting scenes.
Likewise, the ALC-IWD In-Wall Dimmer includes a built-in LCD and allows for easy selection of up to 8 lighting scenes within a given space. All switches also offer the ability to set and adjust lighting displays within the ARISTA app.
By combining the right ARISTA controllers, programmable switches, and sensors in indoor spaces, building owners and electrical contractors can set occupants up for success for years to come.
