Joint Office Gives Q3 2024 NEVI Update

In the last three months, 9,000 new charging ports were opened to the public.

The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation recently released a quarterly update on the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program for Q3 of this year. According tp the update, there are now nearly 192,000 publicly available charging ports in the U.S.

In the Q2 update, the Joint Office reported 183,000 publicly available charging ports nationwide. The Q3 number marks an increase of 9,000 charging ports in the last three months. According to the press release from the Joint Office, this milestone means the national charging network has doubled since the start of the Biden-Harris Administration.

In the last three months, Utah and Rhode Island opened their first NEVI-funded stations. In addition, the Joint Office said there are 69 NEVI-funded public charging ports in operation across 17 stations in eight states.

As stated in the update, "A total of 40 states have released at least their first round of solicitations. Of these states, 29 have issued conditional awards or put agreements in place for over 2,800 fast charging ports across more than 700 charging station locations."

Recent public conditional NEVI awards since the last quarterly update

  • The California Department of Transportation and the California Energy Commission announced on June 3rd the first notice of proposed award across six corridor groups for 11 awardees. The first round proposes awarding a total of $37.7 million in public sector funding matched by $53.2 million in private sector funding.
  • The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on June 12th the first round of conditional awards to fund 45 fast charging ports across nine station locations.
  • The Alabama Department of Transportation and the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs announced on July 1st the first round of conditional awards for 14 grants totaling $11.2 million for 13 station locations through the NEVI program. One grant will be used to train students to install and maintain EV charging infrastructure.
  • The Maryland Department of Transportation announced on July 10th the first round of conditional awards for 130 fast charging ports across 23 station locations supported by $12.1 million in federal funding.
  • The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced on July 12th the first round of conditional awards for 13 locations. Combined, those selected will receive more than $7.8 million in federal funding support.
  • The Arizona Department of Transportation announced on August 27th awards for 18 EV charging station locations. Construction is expected to take a year to complete after final contracts have been signed, with some stations opening by late 2025.
