Years on the Job: 4

An IBEW Local 332 Summer Help Program opened a door of opportunity for Marcus Gomez to enter the electrical industry.

“Immediately, I was thrown into the world of the electrical industry, and I began soaking up as much information as I could,” says Gomez, a San Jose, Calif., native.

While working full time at Sprig Electric in the electrical design department, where he assisted with the design of digital lighting management systems, he enrolled at San Jose State University. Upon graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and earning a certificate in project management, he accepted a full-time position as a project engineer.

By taking on additional responsibilities, he was swiftly promoted to an associate project manager. Today, he works with his team on various YouTube, Google, Amazon, and Facebook projects around the Bay Area.

“My favorite (and the most challenging) part of my role at Sprig Electric is the constant coordinating of multiple projects that are in preconstruction, construction, and close-out phases of the job simultaneously,” Gomez says.

Through on-the-job training at Sprig Electric, he has mastered new programs and gained hands-on experience with lighting control systems and estimating. When new technologies like digital lighting systems are added to Sprig Electric’s repertoire, Gomez quickly adopts and adapts to their implementation and use, says Andrew Rogers, director, corporate training.

“He has quickly become a ‘go-to’ resource for many on our team,” Rogers says. “We are proud to have Marcus among our ranks. He has proven to be both an asset and a resource in this ever-changing, technology-driven industry.”

In five to 10 years, he sees himself continuing to progress in his career by moving up to a project manager, project executive, or group executive position at Sprig Electric.
