Training Workers to Proactively Approach Safety

Nov. 11, 2020
Companies can participate in OSHA's On-Site Consultation Program.

For electrical contractors nationwide, the safety of their field workforce is often top of mind. To ensure that they are protecting the health and welfare of their employees, companies can participate in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) On-Site Consultation Program.

The no-cost program, which is completely separate from the OSHA inspection process, is voluntary and the consultation is confidential. The program is targeted at small businesses, and it can help companies to discover potential hazards at their workplace. In addition, businesses can improve existing programs and even qualify for a one-year exemption from routine OSHA inspections.

Step 1: Opening Conference. Contractors must request a consultation by first visiting OSHA's Consultation Directory.  After a contractor sets up the appointment, a consultant will first meet with the team to discuss the obligations of the employer and the role of the consultant.

Step 2: Walk-through. The consultant will study the workplace and examine potential hazards. He or she will not only discuss applicable OSHA standards, but also other health and safety risks not cited under OSHA standards.

Step 3: Closing Conference. Next, the consultant will point out hazards and discuss the findings. While no citations or penalties are issued by OSHA as a result of the voluntary consultation, OSHA expects companies to correct serious job safety and health hazards.

Step 4: Abatement and Follow-Through. The consultant will provide a full detailed written report to the company. In addition, the consultant may follow up with the company and check progress.

Last year, OSHA staff conducted more than 26,000 visits to small business worksites covering about 1 million workers nationwide. For more information about the program, visit the website.
