The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Deputy Director, Directorate of Enforcement Programs Patrick Kapust unveiled its preliminary Top 10 list of the most cited violations for the fiscal year 2019 at the National Safety Council (NSC) Congress and Expo in San Diego last September.
This annual list often features the same categories from year to year, and 2019 was no exception. Eight of the 10 categories held the same position as 2018, while Lockout/Tagout (No. 4) and Respiratory Protection (No. 5) switched positions. In fact, throughout the years, according to EC&M ’s March 2019’s cover story “Repeat Offenders,” the items on this annual list have remained mostly static, perhaps due to the seriousness of the categories’ nature.
In reviewing the 2019 data, however, it is important to note that while the categories remained nearly identical to the year before, the number of citations across the board for the top 10 categories decreased from 2018.
