EC&M Tech Talk Video — The Most Overlooked Items in the NEC

April 13, 2021
In this video (Episode 1), Randy Barnett, an electrical instructor, trainer, inspector, journeyman electrician, and safety expert, takes an in-depth look at some of the most commonly overlooked items in the National Electrical Code.

In this first episode of "EC&M Tech Talk", Randy Barnett, an electrical instructor, trainer, inspector, journeyman electrician and safety expert, walks viewers step by step through some common misconceptions and challenges in the National Electrical Code (NEC) that often trip up electricians. Note: All references are based on the 2020 edition of the NEC.

He starts with a detailed discussion of the importance of the more than 1,500 Informational Notes (free nuggets of information that can really help you out in the field), specifically discussing why Sec. 110.12 (mechanical execution of work) and Sec. 310.14 (ampacities and temperature limitations on conductors) can make life easier for you. He continues to lay out critical considerations when it comes to several Exceptions as well. And don’t forget about the Definitions. Randy explains why paying close attention to your definitions can make all the difference when it comes to applying Code requirements. For instance, of course we all know what a kitchen, bathroom, or dwelling unit is, right? Read those definitions again, and you may be surprised what you learn. In addition to a section on the technical requirements for GFCIs, Randy closes this Tech Talk with a discussion on Art. 625 (Electric Vehicle Power Transfer Systems). Of particular interest to electrical contractors, Randy highlights the technical requirements necessary to meet the upcoming installation and infrastructure demands that will come with this growing market segment.

Also check out Randy’s latest article, “Use It, or Lose It,” which outlines five practical tips to keep you at the top of the electrical trade. And check back for next month’s edition of EC&M Tech Talk in May.

Barnett is electrical codes and safety program manager for NTT Training in Centennial, Colo.
