What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Storage or Electric Room?

April 13, 2023
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Storage or electric room?

Unfortunately, over the past 40 years I have been in so many electrical rooms that looked just like the one in this photo. It seems like a great place to store appliances and whatever other items maintenance workers, janitors, and property owners need to store, but using this space for storage is a violation of Sec. 110.26(B). Working space required by Sec. 110.26 shall not be used for storage. Period! End of discussion! But of course, it’s not really the end of the discussion because we continue to see pictures showing this type of violation over and over again. I don’t know if better signage would help deter people from using this space for storage or not, but clearly the message does not seem to be reaching the target audiences.
