What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Hanging by a Thread

March 23, 2023
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Hanging by a thread

I spotted this luminaire dangling by the circuit wires while I was walking through a parking lot one day on my way to the beach. It appears as though the anchors that were used to secure this luminaire to the building pulled out of the brick and mortar leaving the fixture precariously dangling above pedestrians’ heads. Section 410.30(A) requires luminaires and lampholders to be securely supported. Were the correct anchors used here? Was the right size hole drilled for the anchors? Were the correct screws used? Or was the brick-and-mortar simply too weak to hold the anchors? Whatever the reason for the failures, the result is a dangerous situation. Repairs will need to be made to make this installation safe and Code-compliant once again.
