What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Creative Cable Support

Feb. 23, 2023
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint:  Creative cable support

Using a metal pipe strap to secure multiple non-metallic sheathed (NM) cables may not be specifically prohibited by Code, but it is also not specifically permitted either. In any case, it makes for a good topic of discussion. Section 334.30 requires NM cable to be secured and supported by staples, cable ties listed and identified for securement, straps, hangars, or similar hardware or fittings designed and installed so the cable is not damaged. I’m not sure that this strap is designed to prevent damage to the cables. The strap may have sharp edges which could damage the cable jacket and conductor insulation. I will certainly give the installer credit for securing the cables, but perhaps a better supporting and securing option could have been used. Using insulated staples would have been a great choice here.
