What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Corrosion Concerns

June 22, 2022
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Corrosion concerns

This equipment is installed in the very damp basement of an old commercial building with a fieldstone foundation. This type of foundation is prone to water seeping into the basement through the stone walls. The moist environment created by the constant water seepage has taken a toll on all the metal equipment located in this space. Boxes are severely rusted, raceways have lots of corrosion, and even the conductors are deteriorating from this harsh environment. Section 300.6 requires raceways, boxes, cable armor, cable sheathing, fittings, and other equipment to be suitable for the environment in which they are installed. I’m not so sure this metal equipment was the best choice for a continuously damp environment. Perhaps nonmetallic wiring methods and boxes would have been a better option here. The use of NM cables here is also questionable, since Sec. 334.12(B)(4) prohibits installing NM cables in wet or damp locations.
