What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Botched Boiler Room Wiring

March 4, 2020
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Botched boiler room wiring

This photo was sent in from an anonymous electrician. He said he found this creative wiring connection when he “went into a boiler room to pull wire for something else.” He believes this is wiring for some HVAC equipment. I’m assuming the electrical metallic tubing (EMT) raceway was there before the orange electrical nonmetallic tubing (ENT) raceway was added.

Section 300.11(C) prohibits raceways from being used to support other raceways unless the raceway is identified for this purpose. Section 362.48 requires all ENT joints between tubing and fittings to be made in an approved manner. I don’t know many inspectors who think hacking apart an LB conduit body to shove the ENT into it meets the intent of that rule. Installing an ENT connector on the end of the raceway and connecting to a box is a much better method than what was done here. Section 362.28 requires all cut ends of ENT to be trimmed on both the inside and outside to remove any rough edges. It doesn’t look as though the installer bothered to do that either.
