The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recently released its top 10 states for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in 2020. Across the top states, more than 60% of green building certifications were office, health care, higher education, and K-12 projects. Massachusetts took the top spot for the first time since 2017, and altogether, the top 10 states accounted for 280 million square feet of space across 1,171 certified projects.
The following slides, ranked from highest to lowest, detail the top 10 states for LEED green building based on gross square feet (GSF) of certified space per capita based on 2010 U.S. Census data and includes commercial and institutional projects certified in 2020. While Washington, D.C., had the highest GSF per capita at 39.53, it was not ranked due to its status as a federal district.
