Biohazards On the Job

Biohazards come in multiple forms, and some have always been ignored by safety programs. But eventually, some of the ignored ones come to light and are correctly seen as biohazards. Many behaviors involve spreading one’s personal biomatter onto other people without their permission. These used to be considered a matter of poor manners and poor personal hygiene, not a matter of creating a biohazard. Do that consistently enough, and you will likely end up with a health catastrophe.

NFPA 70E: Electrical Safety Program Controls

NFPA 70E says, “An electrical safety program shall identify the controls by which it is measured and monitored." This meant employees would receive a barely comprehensible safety manual in all but the most forward-thinking companies. If their supervisor caught them doing something clearly unsafe, they would be written up. Of course, the supervisor wasn’t familiar with that manual. This “get caught by an unqualified person” control method isn’t the best way to control for safety.

Moving Violations Video No. 262: Scary Find at Lunch

PREMIUM CONTENT: Russ spotted this exposed receptacle while eating lunch in an outdoor dining area. The broken cover creates a violation of Sec. 110.12(B) in the 2020 NEC. There’s a good chance the cover broke because it wasn’t an extra-duty type unit, as required by Sec. 406.9(B)(1).

Ground-Fault Protection and Grounding Basics

What is ground-fault protection? The answer depends on whether you are talking about ground-fault protection of equipment or ground-fault protection of people. Just because ground-fault protection is present does not mean people are protected. To avoid confusion between personnel and equipment protection, always specify which one you mean.

Photo 2. A barricade is in place, PPE has been inspected and donned, and the multimeter/meter proving unit are attached to the switchboard. Note the rescue hook nearby to the left. Also, note the worker is wearing a high-visibility vest (not buttoned). The vest must be arc-rated; however, the 4 cal/cm2 vest is not required to be rated at the same value as the protective coveralls (12 cal/cm2) because the vest is not being used to protect the body.

Five Steps for Creating an Electrically Safe Work Condition

You most likely have been trained in the requirements of NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. However, the amount of information you’re expected to retain can sometimes be overwhelming and confusing in a training session. Even though the knowledge is required, workers need a routine set of practical everyday steps they can apply in the field. When planning the job, following five electrical safety steps can help to ensure you accomplish the job safely.

How to Develop a Living and Breathing Electrical Safety Plan

Based on our experience of working with customers in the development of their electrical safety plans, our perspective on electrical safety plans has evolved over the years -- from being a difficult compliance requirement to a strategic assessment tool that measures all aspects of existing practices and systems and their overall contributions to meeting the requirements outlined in NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Let's see what's changed.
