NEC: Low-Voltage Suspended Ceiling Power Distribution Systems

Suspended ceilings in commercial buildings have grown in purpose and importance over the past few decades. Today, even the lighting is going the low-voltage route due to LED lighting technology. To prevent a hodgepodge of power supplies and a bird’s nest of wiring, manufacturers started building low-voltage power distribution systems. The key to getting a good layout is planning.

Tap, Tap, Tap

Often used and frequently misapplied, the rules for tapping feeders (NEC Sec. 240.21) continue to confuse many installers. First and foremost, it’s important to recognize these rules do not apply to service conductors and other conductors that do not meet the definition of a feeder as outlined in Art. 100.

Electricians installing branch circuits in commercial facilities are required to designate branch circuits that operate for three hours or more as “continuous loads,” which applies to lighting circuits that may serve public shared spaces.

Introduction to Commercial Service Calculations

As your career advances, it’s crucial that you understand how to properly perform basic branch-circuit calculations and select appropriately sized branch-circuit conductors. You must also know how to size service feeder conductors and overcurrent protective devices. These skills are necessary when you start performing commercial service calculations.

Whether you are an engineer, utility, manufacturer, contractor, electrician, or inspector, the nation is calling on the electrical industry to shoulder the huge task of creating a nationwide EV infrastructure in a short time frame.

Answering the Call

As an electrical industry, we are being called upon to build an EV charging infrastructure that is functional, sustainable, and installed based on current codes to produce the safest possible installation that protects all consumers. The backbone behind this infrastructure will be based upon the installation of the EV chargers themselves.

Risk of Lightning Strikes Intensifies for Exposed Hospitals

As climate change raises temperatures and produces more extreme storms, regions previously unaccustomed to lightning activity are now experiencing greater number of strikes. Potential for damage is particularly concerning for high-rise critical facilities (like hospitals) in regions where most existing buildings do not have a lightning protection system (LPS). Left unprepared, a power surge could pose serious risks to patient care.

EC&M Tech Talk Video, Episode 12 — Ampacity and the NEC

PREMIUM CONTENT: The definition of ampacity appears in Art. 100 of the National Electrical Code. In this Tech Talk video, ampacity is explained through an example as the definition in the NEC is examined. The three conditions of use identified in Art. 310 are important when it comes to determining ampacity values. First, the location of the wiring method can affect insulation properties.
