Moving Violations Video No. 237: Short on Space

Talk about a tight work space. As Russ shows us in this video, there’s a clear violation of working space depth in front of this 480V panelboard. Section 110.26(A)(1) of the 2020 NEC requires 4 ft of working depth at the front of the panel because it faces another panel on the opposite wall. There’s currently less than 30 in. of clearance.

Cha-Ching! Electrical Engineers’ Salaries Across the Globe

Back in February, we took a look at what electricians earn on a yearly basis around the world. This time, we are diving into electrical engineers’ average annual salary from 10 countries. Click through this slide show if you want to see how your annual compensation compares. As always, keep in mind these approximate annual salaries do not factor in the cost of living.

The Differences Between Grounding and Bonding ― Part 4 of 12

Do you know the requirements for grounding electrodes and grounding electrode conductors? Where more than one alternating-current system connects to a grounding electrode at a building, the same grounding electrode must be used for all systems [Sec. 250.58].

Refurbished equipment often is available faster than brand-new gear. One contractor tells customers with tight schedules: “Here’s an option. We can get this completed in the five weeks you want or it’s going to take us 12 just to get the materials.” This inventory includes General Electric Powerbreak I & IIs.

New Life for Old Equipment

Politics and the pandemic are among the factors spurring the market for reconditioned electrical equipment. The 2020 NEC, NEMA policy, and UL’s Surveillance program help contractors navigate the options and pitfalls.

Photo 1. It is possible to drag an electrical arc from Phase B to Phase C (center to right terminals) when measuring voltage. Notice that the worker is pulling the black test lead toward him or herself before placing it on Phase C. Simply sliding the black test lead from the center to the right-hand terminal could establish a phase-to-phase arcing fault through the airspace between the terminals.

Use It, or Lose It

“Use it, or lose it” applies to everyday life in so many areas. In the electrical trade specifically, not performing certain skills for some time (or with little frequency) means we become rusty. Given the variety of our day-to-day work environments, not all electrical professionals are exposed to skills outside of the job they normally perform. Few things in the field are more frustrating — and potentially more dangerous — than not having a handle on certain skills.

As hiring starts to pick up in a post-pandemic world, electrical employers may need to exercise a skill that may have become a little rusty: the pre-employment background check.

Mastering the Art of Performing a Background Check

PREMIUM CONTENT: As hiring starts to pick up, here’s why every electrical employer must avoid cutting corners while rethinking old approaches to carrying out this seemingly straightforward task. Any large-scale push to hire a lot of workers quickly from a thinner pool could test employers’ ability to methodically vet applicants, and tempt them to take due-diligence shortcuts that could saddle them with workers who create workplace safety risks, productivity challenges, and costly turnovers.
