What’s Wrong Here? Hint: An Incomplete PVC Installation

Oct. 27, 2022
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: An incomplete PVC installation

It appears that at least one of the rigid PVC conduit joints here was never glued, and has separated at the coupling. That gap could make for a really difficult wire pull if not repaired. It also leaves that raceway vulnerable to the entrance of water, dust, debris, critters, and a host of other possible damaging contaminants. Section 300.12 requires raceways to be continuous between outlets, fittings, cabinets, boxes, or other enclosures. Section 300.18 requires raceways to be installed completely before the installation of conductors. Section 352.48 requires joints between lengths of rigid PVC conduit, and between the conduit and fittings, couplings, or boxes to be made by “approved” methods. The definition of approved means acceptable to the AHJ. I don’t know an AHJ that would approve of this method. Do you?
