Texas Poised to Adopt 2020 NEC

Jan. 16, 2020
Following 30-day comment period, new Code to take effect Sept. 1, 2020

According to a recent Code Alert from the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association (NEMA), the Texas Electrical Safety and Licensing Advisory Board held a meeting on Jan. 8, 2020, at which time they unanimously voted to approve proposed amendments to Sec. 73.100 of the Texas Administrative Code. It updates the mandatory state electrical code to the 2020 edition of the NEC, effective Sept. 1, 2020, as required by Sec. 1305.101(a)(2) of the Texas Electrical Safety and Licensing Act. The revised rule will be published in the next issue of the Texas Register, opening a 30-day public comment period. Comments will be shared with the board at its next meeting on May 27.

Municipalities have the authority to make local amendments to the 2020 NEC, according to Sec. 1305.201 of the Texas Electrical Safety and Licensing Act, but proposals must be done in accordance to Sec. 90.4 of the NEC, which states that “the authority having jurisdiction may waive specific requirements in this Code or permit alternative methods where it is assured that equivalent objectives can be achieved by establishing and maintaining effective safety.”
