Nebraska, South Dakota Adopt 2014 NEC

On May 6, the South Dakota Interim Rules Committee approved the adoption of the 2014 NEC with an effective date of July 1, 2014.

Two more states have adopted the 2014 version of the National Electrical Code. The State of Nebraska Electrical Board announced adoption of the 2014 NEC, without amendment, with an effective date of April 9, 2014.

On May 6, the South Dakota Interim Rules Committee approved the adoption of the 2014 NEC with an effective date of July 1, 2014.

The 2014 edition of the National Electrical Code® was issued by the NFPA Standards Council on August 1, 2013. The effective date, which is the date that it replaces the prior (2011 edition) in the NFPA family of codes and standards, was August 21, 2013.  As of that date, the 2014 NEC became officially available for adoption by federal, state, county, and municipal governmental entities.

To date, 26 states have commenced their respective process to update the statute or administrative rule through which the NEC is adopted to reference the 2014 edition. The 2014 Massachusetts Electrical Code (based on the 2014 NEC) became effective on January 1, 2014. In a couple of states, the update is from the 2008 to the 2014 edition.
