Puro UV Disinfection Lighting, based in Denver, recently announced it has partnered with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to bring UV disinfection lighting, powered by its Violet Defense technology, to New York City mass transit.
During a demonstration on May 20, the MTA announced a pilot program using the company’s lighting technology, which will be implemented as part of a layered approach to clean and disinfect subway trains, buses, and crew facilities. If successful, the pilot program, which began in late May, will continue to expand.
The company’s technology uses broad-spectrum UV light designed to eliminate up to 99.99% of viruses and bacteria, offering a non-chemical alternative to disinfect both surface and airborne pathogens. The UV lighting can also significantly reduce the growth of fungi, such as yeast and mold, when used at the recommended spacing and run times.
"In this time of great uncertainty, New Yorkers need to feel safe and have the confidence to venture back into normal life," said Webb Lawrence, co-founder of PURO Lighting. "We are extremely proud to be a part of the MTA's multi-layered approach to ensure their riders are entering a clean and safe environment."
