DLC Releases Updated Requirements for LED-Based Horticultural Lighting

May 13, 2020
Comments for updated draft due by June 16.

The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) recently released a draft update to the Technical Requirements for Horticultural Lighting as Version 2.0 (V2.0), with a proposed effective date of Jan. 4, 2021. Comments for this draft are open until June 16, 2020.

V2.0 contains six key updates, which work to continue the industry transition from traditional lighting data and metrics to horticultural-specific lighting data and metrics to better represent horticultural lighting performance. This draft also addresses barriers to listing variations of products by introducing a process for “family grouping” of products and private labeling of already-listed OEM products. The updates include:

  • Revision to increase efficacy threshold to ≥ 2.10 µmol × J-1.
  • Revision to align with ASABE terminology from ANSI/ASABE S640: Quantities and Units of Electromagnetic Radiation for Plants (Photosynthetic Organisms).
  • Revision to align with UL 8800, which is applicable for horticultural lighting products.
  • Revision to require PPID and SQD information in the TM-33-18 document format.
  • Introduction of family grouping to the horticultural lighting program.
  • Introduction of private labeling to the horticultural lighting program.
