You cannot use a emt rt coupling to join a length of ridged conduit..

Connector not listed for use on ridgid conduit. Listed for EMT as a rain tite compression connector.

It looks to me like they used a ridgid thredless connector in the wrong place, on threads at least one side,wrong application.
