What's Wrong Here? Hint: Mix and Match

What is in this article?:

Can you identify the Code violation(s) in this photo?

Find the Answer

This photo shows threaded rigid metal conduit (RMC) that was installed in a wet location (i.e., on a roof). As you can see, these two pieces of conduit were joined together with a compression coupling.

While the compression coupling itself might be listed for use in a wet location, when installed on the threaded end of the RMC it is probably not very watertight. This would be a Code violation unless the connector was specifically listed for this purpose.

Section 344.42(A) requires threadless couplings and connectors to be made tight when used with conduit. Where buried in masonry or concrete, they shall be the concrete-tight type. Where installed in wet locations, they shall comply with the requirements of 314.15. Threadless couplings and connectors shall not be used on threaded conduit ends unless listed for the purpose.

The connector is missing the plastic bushing to make it water tight.

You cannot use a emt rt coupling to join a length of ridged conduit..

Connector not listed for use on ridgid conduit. Listed for EMT as a rain tite compression connector.

It looks to me like they used a ridgid thredless connector in the wrong place, on threads at least one side, wrong application.
