I once had a project at a refrigeration plant which used ammonia as the circulating fluid to the cooling load. After more than 20 years of exposure to ammonia fumes and water, all of the rigid conduits that came out of the concrete floor ended 8-10 inches above the floor. The exposed conductors simply continued through the gap, possibly by force of habit.
