Addressing Arc Flash Concerns Through Smart Design
Aug 01, 2007, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, By Bill Woods P.E., Integrated Engineering Solutions
Every so often, the electrical industry is able to add to our understanding of what makes a safe, well-designed electrical system. This knowledge can have a profound effect on the way we design, maintain, and operate electrical systems. Such is the case with the growing understanding of the arc flash hazards faced by the workers who operate and maintain these systems. As electrical engineers and designers,

Calculating Arc Flash Energy Levels
Sep 01, 2007, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, By Benjamin O. Medich, P.E., Ballinger
While not a major topic of consideration when designing and maintaining facilities in past years, code-enforcement bodies have become increasingly aware of the danger of arc flash incidents associated with working on live electrical gear. As a result, facility managers and their consulting engineers are paying more attention to arc flash analysis. While the National Electrical Code (NEC) requires

Preventing Arc Flash Incidents in the Workplace
Jun 01, 2003, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, By George Gregory, Square D/Schneider Electric
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has begun to aggressively monitor compliance with passage of the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) 70E standard, issued in 2000. In addition, electrical inspectors across the country are now enforcing a new labeling requirement set forth in the 2002 National Electrical Code (NEC). These requirements, along with guidelines published recently by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in IEEE Standard 1584, Guide for Performing Arc Flash Hazard Calculations, help facilities personnel calculate the hazards of arc flash in different types of equipment in various power systems. What has emerged from this three-pronged approach is a new set of generally accepted best practices for preventing arc flash incidents in the workplace.

Arc flash circuit breaker
Sep 22, 2003, Electrical Construction & Maintenance
Arc flash circuit breaker Masterpact Low Arc Flash circuit breakers are designed and tuned to provide balanced protection for both overcurrent and arc flash. The breakers incorporate a blow-open design that clears faults quickly and provides arc flash protection at the lower current levels often associated with arc flash incidents. The design allows the circuit breaker to go into an accelerated opening

Arc Flash Safety Checklist
Aug 01, 2006, Electrical Construction & Maintenance
An arc flash event releases thermal heat, toxic fumes, pressure waves, blinding light, and sound waves. Arc flash events can cause critical burns, collapsed lungs, loss of vision, ruptured eardrums, puncture wounds, and even death, resulting in lost man-hours, lawsuits, fines, equipment damage, facility downtime, and lost production. Five to 10 arc flash explosions occur in electrical equipment every

Implementing an Arc Flash Compliance Program
Jun 01, 2007, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, By Gerald Wilhite, Weyerhaeuser and David Durocher, Eaton Corp.
Electric shock hazards, including electrocution, have been studied since the introduction of electricity. More recently, however, the dangers of arc flash have come to the forefront of electrical safety programs and procedures. This is because arc flash hazards pose an everyday risk in plants across the world, possessing the potential to destroy equipment and seriously injure, or kill, employees.

Ways to Reduce Arc Flash Energy
May 01, 2008, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, By Bob Fuhr, P.E., PowerStudies.com
Reducing personal injuries from arc flash events should be the main goal of any arc flash hazard assessment. Many facilities have locations where the arc flash energy levels are extremely high. These dangerous areas require electricians and technicians to wear heavy layers of personal protective equipment (PPE) when working on energized equipment. Unfortunately, in some areas, this PPE can increase
