The rules for service conductors and equipment for control and protection of services can be a bit overwhelming. A great way to get your bearings is to use Figure 230.1, which is basically a graphical guide to Art. 230 of the NEC. This figure tells you, for example, that the rules for service conductors are in Part IV. Just above the graphic itself, there’s a sequential (Part I, Part II, Part III, etc.) index showing what’s in each Part.
Something that makes this graphic very useful in your workflow is it’s a one-line diagram that you can follow as you do your project. At one end is the serving electric utility, and at the other is a section that extends beyond the end of Art. 230 to show you where the requirements are for branch circuits and feeders.
The graphic itself does not include Part I. Why is this? Remember, the graphic is a one-line diagram. So it shows “hard” things like conductors, service equipment, disconnecting means, and overcurrent protection. Part I contains the general requirements, and we don’t connect “general” to power.
