Ergonomic Lighting Solution Lets Users GO Green

The advent of LEDs and CFLs has helped propel the lighting industry into the 21st century. Not only are these products energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, but they can also offer significant financial savings over the course of their lifetime. GO FLL (flat LED lighting), a new lighting solution from Toronto-based GO Lighting Technologies, aims to improve upon the benefits of solid-state lighting by adding “ergonomic” to the list of advantages.

Designed for use by industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential markets, the product combines the latest in LED design with “back-end” technology, providing work and living spaces with diffused, evenly distributed light with warm hues. In addition, it emits neither EMI nor ultraviolet radiation and incorporates patented PLF (photo luminescent film) technology, which purportedly produces a high pupil lumen factor over other LED sources. “With a color rendering index (CRI) of up to 93, colors appear natural and vibrant,” says Ron Content, president of GO Lighting Technologies. “The fact that it doesn't flicker and there is no ballast to make noise means it eliminates eye strain, headaches, and other workplace issues associated with traditional fluorescent lighting.”

Mark Reid, branch manager for Torbram Electric Supply, Toronto, agrees. “The illumination provided by GO FLL is comparable to daylight coming in through a skylight on a sunny day. This is one feature we are finding particularly beneficial, particularly during the darker winter months.”

California Title 24 compliant, the company says the product has a life up to 50,000 hours. Moreover, the light's low wattage reduces power consumption by 20% or more when contrasted to legacy fluorescent systems, according to the company. “Considering most commercial buildings have their lights on for up to 5,000 hours a year, our systems will save money for property managers and, ultimately, tenants,” notes Content.

Constructed with a shatterproof polycarbonate illumination surface, the fixture is scratch-resistant, does not discolor, and is resistant to extreme temperature swings. “These lighting systems also generate less heat than present lighting — a major expense to property managers, especially in the Sun Belt, where heat-producing traditional lighting increases the use of expensive air conditioning.” adds Content. “With GO FLL, significant savings are achieved through lower HVAC costs.”

Introduced in November of this year, the UL-, RoHS-, and BAC-compliant planar light fixtures measure 23.5 mm deep, permitting installation in ceilings or walls as a pendant, T-bar, or surface-mounted unit. Its flat design also enables the product to be mounted in numerous positions (down, up, on wall, on angle, etc.) as well as integrated into tight spaces or spaces without a plenum, because the power supply unit can be mounted separately and located numerous feet away from the actual light unit.

Furthermore, GO FLL lighting systems offer remote-controlled dimming and, on certain models, color temperature adjustability for zones and individual fixtures. “Another product advantage is that it's 100% recyclable,” says Content. “Because they don't contain any mercury, lead, or cadmium, they aren't subject to environmental regulations regarding disposal like standard fluorescent bulbs are.”
