The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), Arlington, Va., recently named 39 firms as the nation’s safest construction companies. The association, which oversees the Construction Safety Excellence Awards, an annual ranking of construction safety programs, notes that these companies were recognized for the strength of their safety programs and their overall safety performance during 2010.

The companies were selected because of their strong commitment to safety, according to Ted Aadland, the association’s past president and the CEO of Portland, Ore.-based Aadland Evans Constructors, Inc. Aadland notes that the companies were dedicated to the development and implementation of premier safety and loss prevention programs. The companies also demonstrated outstanding leadership in safety and occupation health management, risk control, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation.

The following electric companies received first place for their safety programs: Kenny Electric, Denver, and Reese Electric, Inc., North Bend, Ore. In addition to the first place winners, the following electric companies won second place: West Electric Group, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Encore Electric, Inc., Englewood, Colo.

Aadland notes that there are multiple winners because the awards are distributed for a number of categories, based on the size of the company, the amount of work performed and the type of work performed. He added that the Construction Safety Excellence Award winners are selected by a panel of five independent safety professionals within the government, corporate and insurance industries.
