The Standards Council of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) issued the 2002 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) on July 13. The new edition, which became effective August 3, includes more than 300 significant changes to the 1999 Code. Among those changes are five new articles on administrative provisions; transient voltage surge suppression; sensitive electronic equipment; fuel cells; and receptacles, cord connectors, and attachment plugs. The NFPA (www.nfpa.org) will begin taking orders for the 2002 edition in mid-September.

In a June 6 news release, the International Code Council (ICC) announced it has no plans to develop an electrical code that duplicates or competes with the NEC.
