APC’s Smart-UPS XL Models Address IT, Telecom, and Other Applications That Must Remain Available Even During Prolonged Power Disturbances

WEST KINGSTON, R.I. – May 7, 2002 – American Power Conversion (APC) today announced two new models in its award-winning Smart-UPSÒ XL Line of uninterruptible power systems (UPS). The Smart-UPS XL 750 and 1000VA provide the small-to-medium business user and large corporate branch offices an enhanced level of power protection against brownouts and outages. With extended range automatic voltage regulation (AVR) and unlimited runtime scalability, these new models deliver computer grade power during deep brownouts or over voltage conditions without using valuable battery power. Further, their extended runtime capability helps ensure the availability of computing, telecom, voice-over-IP (VoIP), and other business critical networking equipment during prolonged power disturbances.

“The convergence of voice and data networks has raised the level of importance to our customers of surviving an outage for hours, not just minutes,” said Ed Bednarcik, vice president and general manager of APC’s Business Network Solutions Group. “This pair of extended runtime Smart-UPS XL models give our customers the flexibility to add an unlimited number of battery modules at any time and enhanced battery management features that ensure that run time will be there when you need it most.”

The new Smart-UPS XL models also features eight receptacles, over 20% more power (in watts) than their predecessors, as well as enhanced battery monitoring to prolong battery life. A high precision battery charge system with automatic true-load battery tests and redundant overcharge protection with temperature compensation provides improved reliability. Batteries will last longer and an audible warning is provided before the batteries wear out. When they are depleted, hot swappable, user replaceable batteries can be installed quickly and easily without powering down the connected load. This saves valuable time and the expense of sending the UPS back to the factory for this service.

In addition, these new Smart-UPS models permit serial or USB connectivity. Via these communication ports, customers may utilize the included award-winning PowerChute software to enhance the availability of the overall system. PowerChute Business Edition provides safe system shutdown and UPS management for servers and workstations. PowerChute proactively notifies the IT administrator with a recommended action when the UPS is experiencing a condition that could threaten server availability such as a weak battery, power outage, or overload. The software also monitors and summarizes power events, inventory information, and voltage history.

The inclusion of a standard Smart-Slot allows users to further customize their power management capabilities with the addition of accessories, such as the Network Management Card and PowerChute Enterprise Manager, that provides the ability to monitor up to 10,000 Smart-UPSs in real time. This capability proves vital when the customer is powering and monitoring large distributed networks or an entire enterprise with equipment in remote locations and wiring closets.

The new Smart-UPS XL 750VA and 1000VA is currently available in North America and will be available in most countries worldwide in Q2 2002. Estimated reseller prices in North America are $529 and $639. Please visit http://www.apcc.com/products/smart-ups/index.cfm for specifications.
