NEMA Publishes Standards, White Papers and an Information Guide

Aug. 14, 2014
The white paper, NEMA LSD 40-2014 updates the document to reflect current industry practices regarding end of useful life issues for self-ballasted compact fluorescent lamps (SBCFL).

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association has published updates on failure modes for self-ballasted compact fluorescent lamps; transformers, regulators and reactors; and three new standards.

The white paper, NEMA LSD 40-2014 Failure Modes for Self-Ballasted Compact Fluorescent Lamps—A NEMA Update updates the document to reflect current industry practices regarding end of useful life issues for self-ballasted compact fluorescent lamps (SBCFL). The white paper responds to potential consumer concerns and communicates the actions that the industry has taken to minimize objectionable failure modes that resulted in these complaints. Specifically, the white paper addresses why SBCFL products have different failure modes from incandescent lamps and explains what the industry, standards development organizations, and third party safety agencies that establish SBCFL safety requirements have done and are doing to minimize any potential safety risk from SBCFL products.

The NEMA TR 1-2013 Transformers, Regulators and Reactors publication applies to single-phase and polyphase power and distribution transformers (including step-voltage regulators and reactors). Step-voltage regulators have been added to the scope in this edition and there is now more alignment with IEEE transformer standards. NEMA TR 1 is one of the few standards on the market that lists audible sound levels for these particular transformers.

The ANSI/NEMA OS 1-2013 Sheet-Steel Outlet Boxes, Device Boxes, Covers and Box Supports and ANSI/NEMA OS 2-2013 Nonmetallic Outlet Boxes, Device Boxes, Covers and Box Supports have also been published.

ANSI/NEMA OS 1-2013 includes standard configurations for metal outlet boxes 100 in³ or less as well as manufacturer specifications for materials, corrosion protection, dimensions of openings, supports, cover screws, markings, and provisions for grounding. OS 1 is the essential industry standard for ensuring compatibility of metal outlet boxes with standardized wiring devices and conduit and cable systems. Additions to the scope and construction requirements for grounding means, ground screw, and ground screw retention can also be found in this edition.

The NEMA KS 1-2013 Heavy Duty Enclosed and Dead-Front Switches (600 Volts Maximum) standard sets requirements for heavy duty-rated products which extend beyond traditional performance. This standard covers heavy duty enclosed and dead-front switches that are: rated at not more than 600V and 4,000A with or without a horsepower rating. The DC ratings shall be up to and including 600V, 1,200A; with or without provision for fuses; with current-carrying parts and mechanisms enclosed in metallic or nonmetallic cases, or that are enclosed when mounted in an enclosed switchboard, panelboard, or similar; and manually operable by means of external handles.

NEMA has also published NEMA MG 1-2011 Condensed Information Guide for General Purpose Industrial AC Small and Medium Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor Standards. A condensation of the standard NEMA MG 1-2011 Motors and Generators, this document includes some parts reprinted in their entirety while others have been combined or abbreviated. In 2007 Congress passed the Energy Independence and Security Act, which increased the level of the efficiency standards on existing covered electric motors and added efficiency standards for additional types of electric motors manufactured on or after December 19, 2010. In February of 2011, NEMA revised the Premium Efficiency Motor tables for medium motors by adding efficiency values for 8-pole premium efficiency motors.
