PEARL Achieves ANSI Accredited Standards Developer Status

PEARL takes step to create first ANSI standard for reconditioning of industrial and commercial electrical equipment

The Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League (PEARL) was recently approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an ANSI accredited standards developer. According to PEARL, this decision comes nearly two years after PEARL created its first ANSI committee and began the application process to reach this status with the goal of promoting a single set of consensus technical standards for reconditioning electrical equipment used in industrial and commercial installations and accepted by a pool of industry professionals and stakeholders.

“ANSI’s decision to accept PEARL’s application for Accredited Standards Developer status has been a goal of PEARL since the organization was founded in 1997 and began creating hundreds of technical reconditioning standards for the most common categories of electrical equipment used in industrial and commercial applications,” said Stephen Reames, PEARL President and President of Oregon Breakers, Inc., Portland, Ore. “Today’s achievement is the culmination of many thousands of man hours from our corporate members and volunteers. I cannot say enough about the men and women who have made all this possible. While considerable work remains to gather industry-wide input, validation, and acceptance of the electrical reconditioning standards, it makes sense to take a moment today and feel proud of the progress PEARL volunteers have achieved to help the electrical industry reach a new level of safety and sustainability.”

According to PEARL Executive Director Mark Stone and Stuart Jackson, PEARL ANSI Committee Chairman, PEARL Vice President, and President of Instel Power Products Inc., Simpsonville, S.C., PEARL’s next steps will be to reach out to the entire electrical industry and find volunteers from every segment — from electrical consumer to manufacturer, retailer to field service organization, and other stakeholders — to assist with the review and improvement of the existing reconditioning standards.
