Electricians from United States and Canada Lend a Hand in Large Washington, D.C., Community Service Projects
Contractors in the Electrical Alliance, Lanham, Md.,, in conjunction with the Local 26 Minority Coalition, a local chapter of the IBEW Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC), volunteered their services to perform much needed electrical work for a local nonprofit, So Others Might Eat (SOME).
More than 180 electricians from across the United States and Canada attending the 21st Annual IBEW EWMC Conference held in Washington D.C., arrived a day early to aid SOME, a community-based organization that helps the poor and homeless of our nation's capital, by completing a total of 720 hours of community service work on five of SOME’s properties in three different D.C. Wards.
The Local 26 Minority Coalition, which includes members of Local Union 26, IBEW, is affiliated with the EWMC and supports its mission to encourage all IBEW members, particularly minorities, to be greater activists in community and political affairs and to be actively involved in human and civil rights organizations both within and outside of organized labor.
Dulles, Va.-based Dynalectric, Upper Marlboro, Md.-based Kelly Electric, and Bowie, Md.-based Power Solutions provided support by transporting workers and supplying materials and equipment to the projects.
National IBEW and IBEW Local 26 electricians completed as much electrical work that time allowed, which included replacing ceiling fans, plugs and switches, and installing exit lights, smoke detectors, and thermostats.
Larry R. Greenhill Sr., VP of IBEW Local 26 and Local 26 Minority Coalition president says, “We appreciated the energy of the hundreds of members of the IBEW as well as Electrical Alliance employers, Dynalectric, Power Solutions, and Kelly Electric. They undergirded the efforts of the EWMC’s Community Service Projects by willingly supplying thousands of dollars in money, materials, and hours of manpower. We are extremely grateful.”
