ComEd investigates second explosion

On July 17 an electrical explosion at a park in downtown Aurora, Ill., blew glass and debris more than 50 feet into the air as nearby crews repaired damage from an explosion the day before. Tuesday evening, city officials received reports of smoke coming from under Broadway Avenue, a half-block south of where an underground electrical explosion on Monday blew manhole covers 15 feet into the air and injured a firefighter. Later, a police officer reported hearing a loud explosion from Millennium Park Plaza one block away on Stolp Avenue. It was reported that the blast came from an in-ground light used to illuminate the park.
A spokesperson for Commonwealth Edison Co. said the smoke was caused by crews trying to reconnect an underground power line to the utility grid. No one was injured in the incident.
