Code Quiz

Starting Jan. 1, 2008, a local disconnecting means (i.e., switch) is required for which of the following luminaires?

A) A fluorescent luminaire that uses double-ended lamps and is direct-wired using RELOC or equivalent manufactured flexible wiring system
B) Ballasted luminaires fed from multi-wire branch circuits, and fluorescent luminaires utilizing double-ended lamps, installed in the production areas of an industrial facility
C) An open bottom, high-bay luminaire with a metal halide lamp that’s cord-and-plug connected per 410.30(C)
D) A 2-in. X 4-in. fluorescent lay-in troffer, which is used as part of the emergency lighting system as emergency luminaire

Answer: A)

Explanation: Per a 2005 change, 410.73(G) was added to require disconnecting means for all direct-wired fluorescent luminaires that use double-ended lamps. Also, direct-wired ballasted luminaires fed from multi-wire branch circuits require a disconnecting means. There are five exceptions to this section which may omit the disconnecting means at each luminaire.
