Q. When determining the placement for receptacles in a dwelling, is the wall space behind a door required to be considered?
A. Yes. A receptacle outlet must be installed so no point along the wall space will be more than 6 feet, measured horizontally, from a receptacle outlet [210.52(A)(2)].
According to 210.52(A)(2), wall space is defined as:
(1) Any space 2 feet or more in width, unbroken along the floor line by doorways, fireplaces, and similar openings.
(2) The space occupied by fixed panels in exterior walls.
(3) The space occupied by fixed room dividers, such as freestanding bar-type counters or railings.
