The three categories of transformer testing are acceptance, routine, and periodic. Each serves a different purpose, consists of different tests, and requires a different skill level. Some companies try to save money by skipping acceptance testing. The thinking is that any problems are covered by warranty. But warranties don't cover:

  • Malfunctions that aren't warrantable.
  • Costs of installation and removal.
  • Downtime.

Transformer manufacturers take great pains to ensure their products are of the highest quality. However, transformers can get damaged during packing, storage, shipping, unloading, or transporting to the installation point.

The purpose of acceptance testing goes beyond what the name implies. Acceptance tests provide you with the baseline data essential for cost-effective maintenance. Absent the baseline data, you can’t determine what has changed since installation.
