At a staff meeting yesterday, the main topic was the high downtime due to the high rate of motor failures. The company has angered some customers with late deliveries.
The production people want the problem solved. When you discussed the plant’s voltage imbalance problem and explained how it was the source of the “motor misery” they agreed to provide whatever you need to do the repairs you said will fix the voltage imbalance.
But doing those repairs won’t undo the damage that’s already been done to the motors. You have some time bombs sitting in the plant.
To avoid having those go off at the worst possible moment, don’t fix just the voltage imbalance problem. You need to fix the downtime problem. That means conducting tests to determine the health of each motor and replacing or rewinding the unhealthy ones.
At a minimum, conduct insulation resistance testing. For plant air and other critical motors, it would be worthwhile to have a qualified motor repair shop perform a full assessment.
