Take a close look at your weekly and monthly PMs. These often have opportunities for eliminating needless steps, thus freeing up maintenance resources for more effective maintenance. Let’s take a look at an example.
An operator interface has an analog voltage meter. There was a production problem traced back to a faulty reading of this meter, so the plant manager decreed that meter would be calibrated weekly. That was three years ago, and it’s not been out of calibration since. You can change this to an annual calibration, or maybe eliminate it altogether.
But what if that meter is frequently out of spec? Rather than spend time calibrating it so often, you could replace it with a digital meter that doesn’t have a balance arm that can shake out of calibration. In addition to examining the existing equipment for more reliable substitutes, analyze the process for ways to eliminate equipment entirely.
