Survey Reveals Lack of Knowledge about Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative

According to a recent survey of large electrical power consumers conducted by Sterling Heights, Mich.-based Myron Zucker, Inc. (MZI), 75% of the 175 respondents have neither heard nor read anything about the U.S. Commerce Department’s Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative (SMI) program. Launched in 2007, the purpose of the SMI is to offer effective and continued support to U.S. companies in their sustainable manufacturing efforts.

Although almost 50% of survey respondents said they plan to implement environmentally sustainable practices, many feel the playing field isn’t level when it comes to non-U.S. competitors, which have a cost advantage because of lack of government requirements to employ sustainable practices.
