EquipmentWatch Launches New Online Fleet Manager

EquipmentWatch, a leading provider of online heavy equipment data and sister online property to EC&M, recently launched its new EquipmentWatch Fleet Manager product, an online tool that allows users to create, save, and export customized databases related to their heavy equipment fleets. Geared toward contractors and government agencies, users can track ownership and operating costs, based on industry-standard reference data for more than 15,000 pieces of heavy equipment.

The EquipmentWatch Fleet Manager provides combined access to all underlying equipment cost data from the Rental Rate Blue Book, Volumes 1-3 and Custom Cost Evaluator, which provide predetermined estimated ownership and operating costs on all kinds of construction equipment. Users can select and store all of their critical equipment information into an unlimited number of fleet databases of any size, by equipment type, location, job, or other criteria.

“The Fleet Manager allows users to create a fleet for a specific construction project, for example, and then save equipment from the Blue Book and Custom Cost Evaluator into that fleet,” says Don Hopkins, associate publisher of EquipmentWatch, San Jose, Calif. “The benefit is that users can make adjustments to the fleet that are applied to all the equipment costs when they create a fleet, saving them time from making those adjustments each time they look up a specific piece of equipment.”

Users can tap this resource to create reimbursement rates, calculate and track internal rates, perform life-cycle analysis and make pinpoint estimates, export data into spreadsheets, and generate user-friendly reports on individual equipment or the entire fleet.

Federally funded highway projects often specify the use of Rental Rate Blue Book for change orders, notes Hopkins, explaining that this book is specified by 47 out of 52 state DOTs. “Contractors who own equipment can look up the rates for their equipment, add the equipment to a fleet, and then print and send reports to the DOT or job owner who pays them the rates for equipment used on the project,” he says.

Users can also input machine hours worked in usage reports and calculate the total cost for an entire fleet and have the ability to automatically update entire fleets with newly published rates, or retain existing costs and rate data for historical needs — or both. “The main benefit of this product is time savings, as it allows users to save all their equipment data,” says Hopkins. “Previously, they could look up equipment rates/costs, make adjustments, and print reports, but there was no way to save that data unless they printed hard copies of the reports or entered all the data manually onto spreadsheets.”
