High-Benefit Lighting Awards Call for Entries

Do you have an indoor or outdoor lighting installation you're especially proud of? If so, The National Lighting Bureau (NLB), Silver Spring, Md., encourages you to enter the 29th Annual High-Benefit Lighting Awards Program. Entries must be received no later than Oct. 31, 2008.

The NLB applies the term “high-benefit lighting” to indoor and outdoor illumination systems that are designed intentionally to fulfill the purpose for when they will be used, to maximize returns for those who own and/or rely on the lighting. For instance, high-benefit lighting installed in indoor workspaces can help people work faster, with fewer errors, because it comprises illumination designed to be “just right” for the specific space, task, and people involved. In retail situations, enhanced lighting can help attract customers and promote purchasing. Outdoors, high-benefit lighting can help prevent accidents, such as vehicle-vehicle and slip-and-trip, avoiding injuries and their associated costs.

NLB Chairman Douglass M. Baillie says the High-Benefit Lighting Awards Program is intentionally easy to enter. “Case histories demonstrating the bottom-line benefits of well-designed lighting comprise the ‘proof of the pudding,’” he notes. “We want to collect as many case histories as we possibly can. That's why we encourage anyone associated with a lighting system retrofit or a new installation to submit a case history chronicling how high-benefit lighting contributed to the bottom line.”

Entries should document how modification of an existing lighting system or development of a new one improved productivity, increased retail sales, or achieved any other bottom-line advantages of high-benefit lighting. All persons who enter the awards program will receive a certificate of participation. In addition, if the NLB develops an entry into a case history, the person submitting the information will serve as the bylined author of a magazine article.
