Hi,
I would appreciate it if someone could give me informaion on a line side tap (existing main electrical panel) for a residential rooftop solar PV installation.
Thanks!

We published an article in our December 2013 issue on the topic of PV interconnection basics (http://ecmweb.com/green-building/interconnection-basics-photovoltaic-sys...). I think it might help answer some of your questions.

See NEC Sec. 705.12. PV is allowed to connect line side of the service disconnect, however, I rarely see anyone doing this anymore unless the conductors are field installed. Most AHJs consider your residential all-in-one panel a UL listed assembly that will be voided if you alter that assembly. There are certain panels out there these days designed for line side PV connections but it sounds like this isn't the case. Most folks end up de-rating the main breaker and connecting load side. Much easier to permit in my experience.
