I recently had my in laws call me and tell me they had a terrible HOT electrical smell in their bedroom and when they touched the fan speed switch one of the screws was so hot that they felt they were burned. So I went and purchased a new switch to install and when I removed the old switch it was indeed melted. There was an extreme amount of heat at that switch at some point. As I removed the switch I discovered there was no ground on the fan speed switch. The new one did so I was sure to connect it. Then, as I investigated further by opening the fan housing I noticed it too had experienced heat and the neutral conductor had been smashed when whomever put the fan together initially. My thought is the smashed conductor was the culprit for the overheating of the switch.
Should I be concerned there is a bigger problem with this installation? The house is no more than 15 years old.
