NEMA Publishes American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment

Rosslyn, Va.-based National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI C136.26-2010, "American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment — Troubleshooting Guide for High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Luminaires." This standard, produced by the ANSI Committee 136 for Roadway and Area Lighting, was last revised in 2003. It offers step-by-step guidance for use in troubleshooting HID lighting fixtures by technicians in the field. It addresses the commonly encountered problems of lamps that are on continuously, cycle on and off, do not start, or burn dimly.

ANSI C136.26 previously only focused on high-pressure sodium luminaires. With this revision, the standard now covers other types of HID lighting, and the title of the document was adjusted accordingly.

“The expanded reach of this standard makes it more relevant to technicians troubleshooting luminaires in the field,” says Rick Sprowls of South Carolina Electric & Gas Co., a member of ANSI Committee 136. “Our goal is to ensure that ANSI C136.26 continues to be a helpful resource for utilities and planners of outdoor area and roadway lighting as the technology evolves.”

The contents and scope of ANSI C136.26 may be viewed, or a hardcopy or electronic copy purchased for $30, by visiting www.nema.org/stds/c136-26.cfm. This addition to the ANSI C136 series joins more than 30 other standards covering a range of topics related to roadway and area lighting, including filament lamps, vertical tenons, and vandal shields.
