Florida Slowest to Spend Stimulus Funds
In a recent letter addressed to Florida Governor Charlie Crist, U.S. Rep. James L. Oberstar, (D-Minn.), who leads the House Transportation and Infrastructure committee, criticized the governor for not spending money the state received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act "quickly, efficiently, and in harmony with job-creating purposes of the Act." Florida ranks last, after the other 49 states and the District of Columbia, when it comes to spending federal highway stimulus money. As of July, the state has spent only 2% of the $1.35 billion allocated for highway projects. The average for all the states comes to 23%.
