IAS department chairs, as well as the treasurer and president/president-elect/VP, must be IEEE senior members or fellows at the time they join the board. For other positions, the only requirement is to be an IAS member. Board members are expected to attend, in person or electronically, at least three of the board meetings held each year. The board meetings are held approximately once per calendar quarter. The first three meetings are typically held in conjunction with an IAS Technical Conference. The meetings usually last one and a half days, with a full day on Sunday and a half day on Monday.

Members filling elected positions hold two-year terms and can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms. Members filling appointed positions serve one-year terms that can be renewed up to four times.

Summary of duties of members-at-large:

  • Members-at-large should bring balance to the executive board by championing the interests of technical and/or geographical segments of the society that are not otherwise represented on the board. • The treasurer should advise the IAS board of any IEEE-level financial matter that could impact the IAS, such as the state of IEEE finances, updates concerning IEEE savings and investments, or budget-rule changes.
  • The treasurer is assisted in his/her duties by a staff of financial analysts from IEEE.
